Health & Fitness
Lifting. I started getting back to the gym regularly Oct 2024 after taking maybe a 4-5 year break. I hope that life and health will allow me to continue for the rest of my life without such long breaks. As I've gotten older and seen other people around me age, there is a significant difference in the quality of life and activity level between those who did and did not take exercise seriously. Muscle mass and strength.
Running. I used to cycle a lot (and miss it). Since having two little kids, It's hard (if not impossible) to take 3-4 hours weekly to go on a decent ride. I've been spending a lot more time running instead. Running has been a lot more time effective for me and a fun new challenge. I'm tossing around the idea of working up to a half marathon. In October, I ran my first race, a ~10k trail race.
Reading
I've been getting back into reading more personal development type books after being burnt out on them for a long time. I think that most personal development books are overly long and could have been more effectively summarized in a single blog post. For now, I'm getting a little bit of a, "you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with," kind of a benefit. Whether it's actually has any effect or not, reading these books feels a lot more productive than some mindless phone scrolling or TV watching.
I've been trying to format and summarize all my book highlights under #BookNotes.
I'm currently on the tail end of Getting Things Done by David Allen.
Social Media
I deleted all my social media accounts maybe around 2022. I tend to check out shortly after a platform switches over to a "curated" feed for my their benefit.
There's a few things I've added back:
- Facebook: A "private" account just for Facebook marketplace and to view the occasional group post that shows up in a search result.
- Instagram: A "private" account for local events and restaurant news.
- LinkedIn: because everyone has one (although this one is on deck for the chopping block)
- Reddit: (is that social media?) Since I started curating my own interests with miniflux, I've been using a lot less Reddit
